Born in Hertfordshire in 1984, Alexa Holloway attended art classes from the age of nine. After years of attending the classes, she then began to teach her own classes whilst studying at school and then college. Alexa studied at Hertford Regional college, where she achieved her Art & Design advanced GNVQ and a City & Guilds certificate in Life Drawing, as well as A levels in Fine Art and Photography.
In 2002, Alexa moved to Canterbury to study for her Degree in Fine Art. There she was influenced by artists such as Marlene Dumas and Jenny Saville. Alexa painted her subjects from below, forcing the viewer to look up at the subject. After reading John Berger’s book ‘Ways of Seeing’, she became fascinated by unusual angles and ‘the gaze’. Alexa practiced in oils and house hold paints and varnishes. She was interested in the different textures and surfaces that different materials created.
Alexa had her first group exhibition in Ramsgate in 2004 at the IOTA Gallery.
On completion of her Degree course, Alexa moved back to Hertfordshire for a year. In that year she experimented with different subject areas and materials. She worked with ink and oils, and as well as producing experimental paintings such as green dress 1 & 2, she produced figurative paintings, landscapes, seascapes and portraits of legendary figures. Alexa also continued to capture her subjects from below, and moved on from figures to trees.
In 2006, Alexa moved to Leeds, where she currently lives and works. Alexa is a member of the Leeds based organization ‘East Street Arts’ and holds one of their artist studios where she continues to experiment with materials, creating contrasting surfaces with matts, silks, varnishes and oils. Alexa works on a commission basis and is also preparing a series of paintings, which she aims to exhibit soon.
Alexa has been commissioned to produce paintings for property re-furbishments, birthday gifts, new baby gifts and wedding gifts; she has also been commissioned to design and produce wedding stationary and creates her own greeting cards.
